The University of Virginia Health System in conjunction with the University Physicians Group (UPG) has an exciting new Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant position in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, charged with medical and surgical care of congenital heart surgery patients of all ages in both the inpatient and outpatient setting as outlined in the Principal Duties and Responsibilities below and will participate in all aspects of patient care as indicated. The incumbent will have direct reporting responsibility to the Attending Physician for all duties, but will also provide ancillary support to other physicians within the Department. UPG offers competitive salaries and potential moving expenses Requirements University of Virginia Health Physicians Group Job Description POSITION TITLE: Pediatric Cardiac Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant JOB CODE: Cxxxx LEVEL/FLSA: 17, Exempt DEPARTMENT: Cardiothoracic Surgery, UVa, UPG GENERAL SUMMARY: The incumbent will assist in the medical and surgical care of congenital heart surgery patients of all ages in both the inpatient and outpatient setting as outlined in the Principal Duties and Responsibilities below and will participate in all aspects of patient care as indicated. The incumbent will have direct reporting responsibility to the Attending Physician for all duties, but will also provide ancillary support to other physicians within the Department. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Functions of the Job: Inpatient Wards (60%): Attends daily rounds with the cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists and intensive care staff and assists in devising medical plans of care for congenital heart surgery patients of all ages (pediatric and adult) Follows the clinical progress of the inpatients and provides medical management or treatments as necessary (in consultation with the medical staff) for all patients on the congenital heart surgery service Performs intracardiac line, chest tube and pacemaker wire removal Assists in bedside procedures (chest tube placement, ECMO cannulation/decannulation, chest closure) as necessary Acts as a resource and provides educational opportunities for medical and nursing staff regarding pre- and post-operative care of patients with congenital heart defects of all ages Provides pre- and post-operative education to patients and their families Devises protocols and order sets related to the care of patients with congenital heart defects Completes other tasks as requested by the medical or nursing staff Outpatient (40%): Assesses the urgency for cardiovascular surgery evaluation by discussing patient data with the referring cardiologist and UVA attending surgeon Refers medically-unstable, surgical candidates for preoperative clearance Ensures all pre-operative studies (e.g. H&P, diagnostic and laboratory studies) have been obtained, either by the referring cardiologist or through the UVA medical system Obtains a thorough medical history and physical examination Completes appropriate documentation of all evaluations, care, and services rendered in the medical record Expedites disposition by identifying patient and family issues for referral to appropriate personnel (transportation, housing, psychosocial, financial or caregiver) Ensures timely follow-up has been arranged with the referring cardiologist and pediatrician/primary physician Provides pre- and post-operative education to patients and their families Responds to telephone inquiries on pre-operative and discharged patients and provides appropriate medical care or counseling Non-essential Functions of the Job: Coordinates the date and time of cardiovascular surgery and ensures the patients are scheduled appropriately and this information is effectively communicated to the referring cardiologist and patient/family Notifies the referring cardiologist and patient/family of any patient updates or schedule changes REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities): Education: Successful completion of an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant program Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant certification Licensure or eligible for licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in the State of Virginia Experience: Minimum of one year experience working in a health care setting preferred Experience working in a functional surgical department a plus Knowledge and skills: Intermediate knowledge of and experience utilizing a personal computer Intermediate word processing skills required Experience with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Congenital Heart Database preferred Apply On-line Send This Job to a Friend Document Actions Send this Print this Navigation Careers Current Job Postings Browse Open Jobs Search Open Jobs Edit Your Profile View Applications Employee Benefits Living in Charlottesville Frequently Asked Questions Go to: UVA UVA Health System UVA School of Medicine Email Webmaster Personal tools Log in
